Nestled in colonial Colaba and tucked-away beneath Mumbai’s favourite Thai restaurant, Nara introduces ‘downstairs at Nara’, that can be literally found down the stairs at Nara, Colaba. For the launch of ‘downstairs’, catch in-house expat mixologist, Andrew Hyman stirring a new cocktail menu while Stranger and Sons brings to you Ann Pinsuda Pongprom, from Asia’s 8th Best Bar, The Bamboo Bar from The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok. Expect a night with not only smooth cocktails by Andrew and Ann but also some smooth Jazz on the evening of Saturday, 30th November 2019.
Located in a heritage building characterised by colonial architecture, inside ‘downstairs’, you will experience how modern and classic come together to create a perfect space for you to unwind. A lush velvet green curtain divides the space into two distinct spaces with their individual personalities – the much loved restaurant Nara and the fun and edgy bar ‘downstairs’.
Expect a marble-top bar that’s dressed with spirits, home-made infusions, hand-blown glassware, candied, pickled, and de-hydrated ingredients, that come together to bring a cocktail menu that is available exclusively at the bar ‘downstairs’. The cocktails are a twist on classics and named in honour of an old-world Bombay, they are modern in flavour, paired with high-quality ingredients and made using intricate techniques.
Celebrating and inspired by the bygone charm of Bombay, the menu for the launch night will feature handcrafted cocktails like Colio made with stranger & sons gin, galangal and plum; Twilight at the prong with stranger & sons gin, martini rosso, fennel and caraway syrup and Flora with stranger & sons gin, St. elder, home-made dill bitters created by Andrew Hyman, bar-lead and expat mixologist at Nara while Ann Pinsuda Pongprom will mix three of her signature cocktails like Border Crossing with stranger & sons gin, guava, kaffir cordial and celery bitters; Smoke Bamboo with stranger & sons infused bamboo, jasmine vermouth, stevia sherry and teapot bitters and Hawker with stranger & sons gin, lemongrass syrup, lime juice, kaffir lime leaf, coriander bitters, topped with ginger beer from The Bamboo Bar for the night.
Spearheading some of the best cocktail bars, Andrew Hyman is a talented and acclaimed mixologist from London with over 25 years of experience. Regarded by many within the industry as one of the most innovative and knowledgeable mixologist, Andrew now brings his signature mixology flair to the bar ‘downstairs’ at Nara. The trained chef turned mixologist has made a name for himself in the world of culinary and cocktails with stints across the globe, from Australia to South Africa, from standalone bars to cruise liners experimenting, learning and even teaching the art of mixology.
The Bamboo Bar has grown in status and reputation to become a beloved Bangkok institution frequented by jazz lovers from around the world. Drinks and cocktails are crafted by Mandarin Oriental’s award-winning mixologist team, including their signature cocktails alongside a ‘Compass’ cocktail menu which draws inspiration from Thailand’s five regions.
Ann Pinsuda Pongprom, Head Bartender of The Bamboo Bar at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok was not only a top 4 finalists in the DIAGEO Reserve World Class Thailand competition, she also came in top 3 in Thailand’s National Flair Competition in 2016. Pinsuda has been a key member of the team from its rise from 34th on Asia 50 Best list, to the recently awarded 8th on 2019’s list and 54th Best Bar in the World.
